Our first class has now come and gone. This past weekend Yann Giguere of Mokuchi Woodworking came to our shop and taught six students the beginning skills of Japanese Plane Tuning. The plane is one of the three basic hand tools of the woodworker, along with the handsaw and chisels.
The Japanese plane, or kanna, of the three is the most difficult to figure out without guidance. On the surface it is simply a wooden block, a chip-breaker, and a heavy laminated blade. continued >

We would like to thank everyone who participated in this weekends Japanese plane tuneup class. Yann Giguere presented a comprehensive demonstration and explanation of setting up a hira kanna, smoothing plane, including blade fitting, tapping out, sharpening, chip breaker setup and sole conditioning. By the end of the weekend every student was making shavings with their new plane.
